Povidone Iodine Solution IP – An antiseptic solution with rapid and long germicidal action.

Povidone-Iodine Solution: The composition of Povidone-Iodine 10% is a complex of the potent bactericidal agent iodine and the carrier molecule povidone. On contact with tissues, the carrier complex slowly releases free iodine. Gradual release decreases tissue irritation and reduces potential toxicity while preserving the agent’s germicidal activity. Povidone-iodine is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It is currently widely used for hand washing, preoperative skin preparation, and cleansing of traumatic wounds. Compared with other agents, such as chlorhexidine, quaternary ammonium compounds, and hexachlorophene, povidone-iodine has a greater bactericidal effect against gram-negative bacteria.
